Marcus Smith: Eddie Jones warns of 'distractions' and claims Emma Raducanu 'hasn't done so well'

Britain lead trainer Eddie Jones has cautioned fly-half Marcus Smith of the "surge of interruptions" that might come - contrasting them with the interest in Emma Raducanu since her US Open win.

Smith, 22, is viewed as England's next breakout star and fell off the seat to score an attempt against Tonga on Saturday, moving a late Twickenham assault.

Jones cautioned against becoming "ungrounded", guaranteeing Raducanu, 18, "hasn't done as such well" since her Grand Slam win - his remarks notwithstanding her having just played two occasions since.

"The enormous thing for youthful players is interruptions," said Jones.

"Interruptions can be the openness they get in the media, the commendation and analysis they get, gatherings of specialists who consider this person to be the following huge thing.

"There's a justification for why the young lady who won the US Open [Raducanu] hasn't done as such well thereafter. What have you seen her on? The first page of Vogue, the first page of Harper's Bazaar, whatever it is, wearing Christian Dior garments.

"He is grounded, yet they all get going grounded. Nobody begins with their feet off the ground or they don't get in the group, or they don't win a US Open. Yet, there's this surge of interruptions that comes in that makes you ungrounded."

Jones' remarks have been reprimanded via web-based media, with BBC Radio 5 Live tennis pundit David Law saying his comments regarding Raducanu were "clueless, flighty, chauvinist garbage".

Raducanu has played only four matches since her victory at Flushing Meadows in September, while Vogue talked with her before she traveled to New York.

She was positioned 338th on the planet prior to arriving at the fourth round at Wimbledon in the late spring, and was slung to 23rd in the rankings subsequent to winning her first major. On Monday, she made her presentation in the best 20.

Raducanu, who is the favorite at the WTA 250 competition in Linz this week, has said that she won't permit her off-court exercises to meddle with her preparation.

"I made it extremely, clear to everyone in my group that I was not going to drop one instructional meeting or practice meeting for any off-court responsibilities," she said.

"That was a non-debatable for me. I needed to ensure that that is my need and it is."
